We had a 2:20 pm flight from Rome to Dubrovnik, Croatia. The flight was only 1 1/2 hours. Don prearranged a driver to pick us up at the airport and take us to Dubrovnik. He dropped us off at the Pile Gate because our hotel, Stari Grad is inside the walled old city!
Stari Grad is one of only two hotels inside the walled old city. Our hotel UNESCO historic site. So cool. We are on the third floor with no elevator. Four floors of room (8 rooms) and rooftop restaurant for breakfast and dinner.
After checking in we walked around the Old City and found an outdoor restaurant to eat at about 6:30. The prawn salad was delicious! I had seabags and Don had a traditional Dalmatian seafood dish. After dinner we walked to the Old Harbour.

Monday, August 22. Don's 70th birthday!!
We started Don's birthday with breakfast on the hotel's rooftop.

We had two tours scheduled for today. The first was a walking tour on the Old City Wall that completely circles the Old City. It was 3 1/2 miles around. Beautiful views. Many steps and some towers to go through. Great tour.

The afternoon tour was a walking historic tour of the old city. We were hot and tired by then, but still good. A nap and then some gelato saved the HOT day.
To celebrate Don's birthday we had dinner at 5 Above, our hotel's rooftop restaurant (where we have breakfast each morning). We went with the 3 course meal: appetizer shrimp crevice and steak tartar, we both had lobster and pasta for our main entree, and for dessert - birthday cake!

Tuesday, August 23
We went on an all day boat tour of the Elaphite Islands.
Lopud for three hours. We rented chairs at a resort on the Adriatic Sea.
Sipan for an hour
Kolocep for an hour.
We had a fish lunch on the boat after Lopud.
We had dinner at Proto (made reservations the day before). the sea bass in a salt bake was delicious.
Breakfast on the rooftop.
We took the cable car up to Mt Srd. It provided wonderful views of the Old City and the surrounding islands.
After the cable car we decided to visit the Lovrijerac Fortress that was built on a rock just west of the Old City. It guarded the approaches from both land and sea.
We still had time to spare before needing to get to the ferry to Split so we visited several museums and churches in the Old City and had lunch at an outdoor cafe.
4:30 ferry to Split so we needed to say goodbye to Dubrovnik. It was fabulous!
